Fictional example · real funder rules · checked 21 October 2026

See a complete funding research sample

Five sourced candidate reviews, fit explanations, a funding calendar, an illustrative budget and practical next steps.

Example River Learning Society and its project are fictional. No registration number, past gifts, client relationship or successful application is claimed. The real funder rules show how a report separates a promising route from an enquiry, a future cycle and a mismatch.

The example brief

A new volunteer freshwater sampling and shoreline-habitat education pilot benefiting Ottawa residents, on the Ontario side only. May–September 2027. $5,000 for consumable sampling supplies and workshop materials. Registered charity status, public access and an education-led design are assumptions in this fictional scenario.

This is a research and planning example, not a testimonial or evidence of typical results. Five reviews do not mean five suitable grants. No route is confirmed eligible for an actual applicant.

TD Friends of the Environment FoundationCheck first — conditionalCitizen science and environmental education align with a public-facing pilot. Dec 15, 2026 deadline; notice Apr 2027Confirm project and budget, then use the official online application before work starts. Do not recast research as education. Official source.
Ottawa Community Foundation Community Initiative GrantsUpcoming — early 2027Environment work serving Ottawa residents fits the broad scope. Programme costs can qualify. Exact 2027 opening/decision dates unconfirmed. Existing guidelines describe end-May decisions; do not assume that is the 2027 schedule.Recheck in January as a suggested reminder. If award timing is late, defer unfunded costs within May-Sep or do not use this route. Official source.
Echo FoundationLow-priority enquiryLower priority. Its environmental grants prioritise protecting ecologically important natural areas in Eastern Canada. Education and sampling are not an automatic fit; other sustainable-practice projects are considered case by case. No deadline or decision timetable published on cited pageCheck whether this education-led project is within scope before preparing a full LOI. Do not treat geography alone as a strong match. The full package requires three annual reports/financials, budget and other funders. Official source.
Greenbelt FoundationSkip this briefOntario Greenbelt focus does not establish Ottawa-side local project eligibility. No active call; early 2027 only anticipatedKeep out of the funding calendar. Do not equate Ottawa's Greenbelt name with this funder's region. Official source.
Max Bell FoundationSkip this briefThe funder seeks public-policy change. The assumed local sampling/education brief does not establish that purpose. No relevant deadline assignedExclude. Do not invent policy work to make a match. Official source.

Source rules and dates were checked on 21 October 2026. Recheck the official pages before applying. Echo's main environmental priority is protecting important natural areas; education and sampling are case-by-case, so it is a lower-priority enquiry.

How to use the PDF and spreadsheet

  1. Read the project assumptions and the recommended order of work.
  2. Check the fit questions and budget exclusions before preparing an application.
  3. Use the calendar to distinguish a published deadline from a suggested reminder.
  4. Replace the illustrative budget with actual costs and allocate each expense once.
  5. Confirm the real charity's registration, current grants, reporting and site access.

The public spreadsheet is a fixed reference example. Its saved budget amounts total $5,000 and do not require recalculation. It is not an editable budget calculator. Direct staff contact details and real charity history are omitted.
