Stollery Charitable Foundation grants: how to approach it for 2027

At a glance

  • Where: Edmonton and Kamloops. National or international organizations are considered only in limited cases, where the project directly benefits those communities.
  • How it works: contact the foundation's executive director first. If the idea fits, you may be invited to send a letter of inquiry (LOI), and some LOIs are invited to submit a full proposal.
  • After a decline: the charity must wait at least one calendar year before applying again.
  • Spring 2027 timeline:
    • Letters of inquiry due January 22, 2027, at 4:30 p.m.
    • Invited full proposals due February 19, 2027, at 4:30 p.m.
    • Board meeting April 10, 2027.
  • Who can apply: registered charities and other qualified donees in good standing with the Canada Revenue Agency.

Grant sizes

From a few thousand dollars up to $100,000 or more. Grants to first-time applicants rarely exceed $30,000. Operating or project funding can be requested for up to three years.

What it funds

A wide range: operating support, capital campaigns, capacity building, pilot programs, renovations, equipment, one-time initiatives and special projects. It favours creative solutions to social issues and collaboration, especially for projects over $50,000. It expects a plan for how work will continue after the grant ends.

What it usually doesn't fund

  • Travel, research and conferences
  • Political or religious projects, programs or activities
  • Individuals
  • Arts, environment, parks and recreation, or animal welfare

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending an unsolicited proposal. Start with a conversation.
  • Asking for a large first grant. First-time grants rarely exceed $30,000.
  • Applying for environment or arts work, which it usually doesn't fund.

Want to see which other foundations fit your project?

Checking one funder is a good start, but building a strong shortlist takes legwork. Tell us about your project and we’ll use CRA gift records to find five foundations that have supported similar work, then verify each one’s current rules and deadlines on its website. The initial fit check is free, and you see a summary of what we found before you decide to pay. If we can’t find at least one opportunity open now or opening soon from a funder new to you, you pay nothing.
