What it funds

Project grants must increase an organization's capacity and create or expand services, rather than maintain existing ones. Examples include new equipment and new programs. Educational field trips can be considered.

What it won't fund

  • Conventions, conferences or events
  • Fundraising events such as galas, golf tournaments, runs or races
  • Mailing, shipping or delivery fees
  • Salaries and administrative costs for school employees
  • Ongoing administrative costs not linked to front-line programs (except for Signature Grants)
  • Financial assistance for individuals
  • Standard classroom supplies, professional development, or graduation and class trips abroad

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Asking it to keep an existing program running. Project grants are for new or expanded services.
  • Building the request around an event. Events and conferences are excluded.
  • Following the wrong dates. Part of the application page still shows older dates. Go by the 2027 schedule above, and recheck the page before you apply.

Want to see which other foundations fit your project?

Checking one funder is a good start, but building a strong shortlist takes legwork. Tell us about your project and we’ll use CRA gift records to find five foundations that have supported similar work, then verify each one’s current rules and deadlines on its website. The initial fit check is free, and you see a summary of what we found before you decide to pay. If we can’t find at least one opportunity open now or opening soon from a funder new to you, you pay nothing.
